        Take-Away Points of the Presentation

        1. There is an extreme obesity epidemic in the US (BMI > 40); there has been a 16-fold increase in the prevalence of adult class III obesity since 1960.

        2. Obesity-related disease affects the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, integument, genitourinary, and psycho-neurologic systems.

        3. Obesity increases mortality and shortens life-expectency.

        4. Surgery is the only treatment option to consistently achieve long-term weight loss in the severely obese.

        5. Bariatric surgery today is achieved by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric banding.

        6. Weight loss surgery leads to reduced mortality.
