Zika Virus: What Clinicians Need to Know

      

    Objectives of the Presentation

    Participants should be able to:

    • Understand the modes of transmission for Zika virus infection.
    • Review the indications for and limitations of Zika virus testing.
    • Develop strategies for preconception counseling and risk of sexual transmission for patients before or after travel to areas with active Zika virus transmission.

        Take-Away Points of the Presentation

        1. Zika virus transmission is ongoing in multiple countries and US territories.

        2. Zika is transmitted via mosquito, maternal-fetal transmission and sexual transmission.

        3. Testing is generally indicated for pregnant women regardless of symptoms, symptomatic men and women and who have travelled to areas with Zika transmission or had unprotected sex with someone who has travelled.

        4. Testing should be individualized based on risk factors.

        5.Counseling regarding risk of sexual transmission must accompany all discussions regarding travel risk or use of testing after return from travel.
