Mindfulness and Mindful Eating for Patients with Obesity, Diabetes, Coronary Artery Disease, and Hypertension

      

    Objectives of the Presentation

    Participants should be able to:

    • Learn mindful eating and mindfulness exercises to teach patients and resources for further learning.
    • Learn how mindfulness practices help: to decrease automatic and unplanned eating, to mindfully choose healthy foods and portions, and to improve compassion for self and other enhancing lifestyle modification.
    • Learn evidence for mindful eating and mindfulness meditation effectiveness with unhealthy eating and nutrition choices.

        Take-Away Points of the Presentation

        1. Mindfulness skills and mindful eating techniques enable long term changes in eating behaviors and nutrition choices to enhance weight loss, blood sugar control, lipid control and blood pressure control.

        2. Patients can learn mindfulness skills during office visits and/or group visits with physicians and mindfulness teachers.

        3. Mindfulness skills can help physicians manage the stresses of daily practice and avoid burn-out.
